July 15-19, 2012
Linda Infante Lyons

Plein air, or field painting, is one of the most direct and satisfying means of painting the Alaska wilderness. The artist is forced to translate emotional and visual information quickly, as light and weather continually shift. Rendering an image that involves the scope and grandeur of the Wrangell Mountains is inspirational and challenging, since one must work to capture the essence of the vast landscape on a two-dimensional surface.  This workshop will provide an opportunity to observe, relate, and visually express a personal relationship with this unique natural environment.

The workshop will involve both studio and field painting. Instruction will take place at the Hardware Store and also incorporate hikes in the local landscape. It will consider landscape painting with oils, color and color mixing, and composition. Artists will be encouraged to take field notes, photographs, and sketches. Paintings will be displayed in the community at the workshop’s conclusion. Participants should provide their own supplies.
