History of Kennecott and McCarthy

Learn the exciting and dynamic history of McCarthy and Kennecott from the mining days to the present in this fun-filled two-day course. Presenters include National Park Service historians and local sourdoughs. This course is designed for guides, outdoor and experiential educators, interpreters, classroom and home-school teachers, and for anyone interested in local history. We welcome participants from all over Alaska and the Lower '48.
Programs are based in the rustic town of McCarthy at the "Old Hardware Store," just a short walk from the 25 mile-long Kennicott Glacier. The Hardware Store houses a classroom, dining area, communal kitchen, lounge, libraries and storage space. Participants can camp on the banks of the Kennicott River, a short walk away, or choose to stay at other local accommodations. You and your family are invited to dine with use for an extra $25/person per day, or pay a small fee per meal.
- Costs: $120/person before April 23rd. $165 if you register between April 23 - May 15. Includes dinner on the first night, camping and food storage facilities, as well as instruction. Full and partial scholarships available. Local hotels and cabin rentals available for additional cost.
