Our June Origin Stories event will be hosted by long-time local Stephen Edwards. Seven decades ago, Stephen's dad, Jim Edwards, discovered McCarthy and quickly decided to call it home. Jim's original slideshow, presented by Stephen, is a window into his life as a homesteader, bush pilot, inventor, surveyor, and father from the 1950's to the 2000's. This year, Stephen will share a selection of his father’s slides with time for conversation and Q&A, creating space for longtime locals to chime in and for newer community members to ask questions and learn about the post-mining days of McCarthy and Kennecott.

Glaciers as Kin: Rethinking Ice and Ocean Science in Alaska and Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) with Dr. Aurora Roth - July 9 @ 7 PM, Porphyry Place.
Glaciers — on land and ending in the ocean — are vital to ecosystems and neighboring communities. Dr. Aurora Roth is a born-and-raised Alaskan scientist who has most recently been working in the glacial fjords of Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland). In this talk, she shares what it looks like to study glaciers not only as physical systems, but as meeting places where ice, ocean, people, and animals are connected. Join her for stories from across the Arctic about what changes when we treat glaciers less as objects to measure and more as kin. She will also reflect on the joys and challenges of connecting Western science with Greenlandic community priorities, especially in the current political moment.
Life on the Boundaries - July 28 @ 7 PM, Porphyry Place.
Drawing from their poetry, essays, and lived experiences, local authors Jeremy Pataky and Michelle Latvala, with Denali-area author Erica Watson will reflect on how they understand and communicate place in their work while living in close proximity to National Park Service public lands. How does the environment, seasonal rhythms and changing climate, and human history and policy interact to create both belonging and tension in our communities? Join us for an evening of short readings followed by conversation. A reception and signing will follow the program, and books will be available for sale.
