The Alaska Wrangell Mountains Field Studies immerses students in academics, community living and wilderness travel. We alternate between time spent in the off-the-grid town of McCarthy and the backcountry of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. We spend Week One in town, Week Two in the backcountry, Week Three in town, Weeks Four through Six in the backcountry, and Week Seven in town.

In town,  student  life  revolves  around  the  Wrangell  Mountains  Center  campus, including its National Historic Register headquarters. Students  and  faculty  work  alongside  local  residents  living  off-grid  in  a  remote  and  rugged  location.  The  Center  campus  provides  kitchen,  dining,  library  and  classroom  space  supporting  field  sessions  that  are  within  easy  walking  distance  of  town.  The  glacier  edge,  braided  rivers  and  boreal  forest  are  all  within  a  mile  or  two.  In  addition  to  coursework,  students  participate  in  cooperative  living  with  Wrangell  Mountains  Center  staff,  cooking  meals,  maintaining  facilities,  tending  a  garden,  and  sleeping  in  tents. Explicit  attention  is  given  to  awareness  of  use  of  energy,  food  and  materials;  of  the  dimensions  of  healthful  living;  and  processes  of  effective  communication  and  cooperation.
