Guest Housing + Residencies
authentic accomodations
At the Wrangell Mountains Center, we connect people with the wildlands of the Wrangell–St. Elias region through art, science, and education programming. Our remote campus in McCarthy, Alaska exists to facilitate this programming and further our mission people and wild places thriving together in a changing world. When our guest cabins are not booked in relation to our programs, we welcome like-minded visitors who want to experience this extraordinary place and learn more about the work we do.
We have three cabins available for rent at various times throughout the summer. Our cabins are surrounded by our campus and adjacent to staff housing and community gathering spaces. Guests will be given a campus tour upon arrival and are welcome at our public programming, but should come prepared to be respectful of our mission and other programs and know that we are not a lodge. If you are looking for a place to stay with extensive guest services, there are many other options. If what we do connects with you and you value authentic and rustic accommodations, we look forward to meeting you.
What should I expect while staying at the WMC guest cabins?
A great location, nestled between downtown McCarthy and McCarthy creek, our campus is a central hub in the community with shuttle access to Kennicott.
Rustic, authentic, Alaskan accommodations! Our guest cabins have no running water. There are no flush toilets on campus, and guests use our campus outhouses. Potable water is available at our center kitchen, and guests are welcome to use our outdoor bucket shower.
Guests can inquire about joining us for communal meals, when available, but do not have access to our kitchen.
Cabins have no electricity, but guests have access to communal spaces for charging devices.
Low impact lodging. We have a limited laundry capacity and provide bottom sheets, pillows, pillow cases and wool throws, but guests will need to bring sleeping bags/blankets and top sheets as desired.
Discounted parking of $5/day is available as a benefit extended to our guests.
Navigating to the Wrangell Mountains Center in downtown McCarthy on your own. This can take some doing, and we are happy to provide tips and advice, but ultimately it is your responsibility to navigate to our facility and adequately prepare for the challenges of this remote area of Alaska. For example, there is no vehicle traffic in the town of McCarthy and all vehicle traffic ends at the Kennicott River, which is a 1 mile walk (or shuttle ride) from the Wrangell Mountains Center. In order to make the most of your time in this exceptional area, we recommend that you take a little extra time to research the area.
The opportunity to engage with our public programming is available to guests depending on when they visit. Be sure to check our programming calendar or ask your host if we will be hosting community programs during your stay!
Work space can be provided upon inquiry for additional charge. Looking for a space to spend some time creating, writing, doing art? Inquire about our studio space and design your own summer residency on the edge of our nations largest National Park.
