This three-part series will share the personal origin stories of featured guests, creating space for broader conversations about identity, belonging, and place. By reflecting on where we come from—and why it matters—this series will be a powerful way to build connection and deepen our understanding of the Copper River Basin as a place of both shared history as well as a deeply personal landscape. This month, our featured guest is long-time local, Steve Edwards!
Seven decades ago, Jim Edwards discovered a place to call home in McCarthy. Jim's original slideshow, presented by Jim's son Stephen Edwards, is a window into his life as a homesteader, surveyor and father from the 1950's to the 2000's.

In 2023, the Storytelling Festival was a 3-day competitive event held at the Glacier View Campground on the West Side, the Old Hardware Store at the WMC, with the finalists performing at the Roadside Potatohead on the third night.
THIS YEAR, we are narrowing down the competition to ONE night, in the historic and magical Old Hardware Store. In addition to the competition we will be introducing new ways to engage with storytelling and new voices to hear from. We will include storytelling workshops along with a non-competitive night to hear from guest storytellers and our elders.
Making Place: Combining prints and words
Artists in residence, Tyler Thenikl and Sarah Gilman will lead a joint workshop on printing and illustrated poetry related to place.

Revitalize your connection to the wilderness and your writing through this immersive weekend of nature writing and contemplative practices in the gorgeous landscape of McCarthy, Alaska. Together we'll deepen our writing practice as we turn our attention to the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of wild nature and human nature. We’ll be nourished by the unique forests, rivers, and mountains of Wrangell-St Elias National Park for inspiration, humility, and connection with ourselves and the more-than-human world. Facilitator, Michelle Latvala, will guide us in writing practices, nature practices, and embodied contemplative practices in order to write more deeply from the landscape and from ourselves.
Group Size: Max 15 (kept small based on nature of the workshop)
Hearty vegetarian meals served on the WMC campus (9am, 12pm, 5pm)
Michelle will provide a mixture of indoor and outdoor time, as well as walking and writing time. On each day, depending on weather and group, we may walk 1-4 miles over uneven terrain around McCarthy (trails, rocks, etc) to do some contemplative writing in the field.
Registration Fee: This weekend workshop is offered at $350.
Overnight accommodations are not included. We recommend participants arrive by Friday evening at the latest and depart Monday morning at the earliest in order to fully immerse themselves in the weekend workshop.

This is one of our most beloved art programs, a two-week artist residency program, an immersive creative experience in North America’s largest National Park. The Wrangell Mountains Residency Program aims to support artists of all genres, writers, and inquiring minds. We invite applicants with creative and inquisitive minds who will both add to and benefit from the interdisciplinary efforts at our community hub in McCarthy, Alaska and the surrounding Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. In 2024 we will host four residencies: June 5-19 and July 30 - August 13. Applications are now closed.
A part of our Summer Arts & Lecture Series: During this two day weekend event, participants will engage with the inspirational, cultural, and foundational relationships to place in the Wrangell Mountains through community discussion, and presentations in the arts and sciences. In collaboration with NPS, community discussion facilitated by geologist, Mike Loso, with special guest and Hereditary Clan Leader, Wilson Justin, featuring the artwork of Karolina Zakravska.

WISE (The Wrangell Institute for Science and Environment) teams up with the WMC for Geology Camp!
There is a high demand for this program — and it’s easy to see why. Some of the Copper River Valley’s sharpest (and silliest) youth (ages 12 and up) come together to learn from geology experts and observe first-hand the dynamic geology of the area.
From taking a tour of the Kennecott Mill to sleeping next to a glacier, it’s four days packed with learning and fun.
