Gardens in the Great North

We are nonprofit organization operating in a remote, off-the-grid Alaskan mountain community. Naturally we grow as much as we can, and that's why we are inspired to have an enthusiastic and engaged gardener.

Learn more about organic gardening in the land of the midnight sun, connect with the quirky local community of homesteaders and travelers, and enjoy all the epic outdoor adventures that this area offers.

The Deets

Part-time gardening work in exchange for room and board. We are looking for multiple people to help us during the intense planting season, a period of 2-3 weeks in the last week of May thru the second week of June. We are also interested in bringing on a WWOOFer/gardener for the entire summer, starting the last week of May thru mid-September.

Hours expectation: Averaging 20 hours/week

Responsibilities include planting, weeding and watering our enviable gardens at our campus in the historic downtown of McCarthy, Alaska.

Delicious and nutritious meals and primitive lodging (valued at approximately $1,000/month). This is a great opportunity to access all the adventures in the Wrangells and learn about gardens in the great north.

Email info@wrangells.org to apply.

Off-grid

The Kennicott-McCarthy community is off-the-grid, a perfect context to unplug and explore sustainable living for the summer. We power the electricity for our campus almost entirely on solar (not too difficult in an Alaskan summer!) and are always looking to experiment with sustainable living techniques.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Conditions at our campus can be more primitive than most people are used to. Our Kennicott-McCarthy community is entirely off the grid. There are very few bathroom with indoor plumbing. There are even fewer washing machines. Outhouses are the norm. There is no central power grid, so we conserve.

Despite the primitive living conditions, you will have regular access to reliable Internet. Cell phone service is available in McCarthy but currently only available for Verizon phones. No other carriers work in McCarthy.

Explorers Wanted

We are looking for someone to tend our gardens, with ample time available to explore the community and to go on the many adventures available in our epic backyard.

Our gardens are an important part of our campus, so as a gardener you will play a significant role in our organization. This is also an area for adventures: glacier hikes, epic backcountry camping, river rafting, and day hikes with spectacular views from the peaks of mountains. McCarthy is a fascinating rural mountain community with many opportunities to connect with local residents, many of whom have their own homesteads.

Our gardener will be given ample opportunity for adventures and to explore the community. We are seeking a gardener for the entire summer season, but we also welcome applications for a few months of the summer.

Accommodations

We operate from mid-May through September 15th. Housing is a private wall tent. Wall tents are spacious, like a small room, with enough clearance to stand around and walk about comfortably. Healthy, nutritious and tasty meals are provided, many of those meals will be prepared for you by our chef and kitchen staff, but you will prepare some of your own meals throughout the summer and be expected to pitch in from time to time in the kitchen.

Community

Surrounded by incredible beauty and at the heart of outdoor activities, McCarthy is a special place in Alaska. Being a part of the WMC provides travelers a unique opportunity to experience McCarthy and the Wrangell Mountains of Alaska in a very distinct way.

We also cultivate a unique camaraderie among our staff and crew on campus. A spirit of collaboration and personal initiative forms the core of our campus culture.
